So You Want to Make a Costume?
Create any costume from the very beginning with planning, construction and input. 8 week course.
Service Description
8 session class over 9 weeks, must reserve all 8 sessions. Ages 16+ Course Description: An eight week, highly personalized costume design and construction class where students bring their own concept—renaissance festival, cosplay, or original character—and are guided through the full process of creating it. This course blends creative direction, sewing, and problem-solving to help students turn their vision into a wearable costume piece. Core Project: Design and create a custom costume based on an original or inspired concept Class Structure: Max 4 students - 150/student cost Highly individualized instruction Project-based learning with group support Class Materials (Varies by project, but generally): Fabric (project-specific) Thread Misc sewing tools Fabric scissors, pins/clips Patterns (optional) Trims, embellishments, accessories Weekly Breakdown (8 Weeks) Week 1: Concept + Planning Intro + class overview Students present costume ideas Refine concept and scope (what is realistic in 8 weeks) Break project into components (base garment, layers, accessories) Create a build plan Week 2: Materials + Pattern Strategy Fabric selection guidance Pattern options (commercial, modified, or simple drafting) Sourcing materials Finalize construction approach Week 3: Begin Construction Start base garment Intro to sewing as needed (machine or hand) Individual troubleshooting and guidance Week 4: Build + Fit Continue construction Fit checks and adjustments Problem-solving challenges Week 5: Details + Layers Add defining elements (sleeves, closures, trims, layers) Introduce simple embellishment techniques Refine silhouette and structure Week 6: Character + Styling Accessories and styling elements Visual cohesion (color, shape, texture) Optional: light discussion of hair and makeup to complete the look Week 7: Finish + Refine Final construction steps Reinforce seams and structure Fix problem areas Polish overall look Week 8: Final Look + Showcase Final adjustments Mini showcase or wear your costume Group reflection and celebration End of Class: Mini showcase or costume reveal with optional photos
